EZRA & MYCIE
Project Type
Photography
Date
June 2018
Location
Prague, Czech Republic
With this project, I decided to work around classical fashion photography and the subject of merely presenting clothes, but instead steer towards a more thematic direction. My two friends, Ezra and Mycie, happily agreed to model for me.
Mycie identifies as non-binary, uses they/them pronouns and, as you can see, can pull l off a dress and red lipstick better than Kate Moss these days. Ezra, at the time of the shoot, does not care about stereotypical beauty images, thrown upon women by society over the last centuries, and has stopped shaving their body hair completely. A few months later, Ezra started to identify as non-binary as well, using they/them pronouns, just as Mycie.
The whole series was taken in the couple’s own apartment, so they could work and play with an environment that they are used to and in which they can truly be themselves. Together we chose the clothing, partly from their own wardrobe, partly from mine, and decided in which part of their home we would shoot. The outcome offers a fresh and interesting point of view to a non conformal approach to gender roles in society, and additionally allows a personal insight to the life of a young and modern couple. It questions what is considered male and what female, and shows that things can work just as well the other way around.
